Hi there. I hope to cross passo del stelvio in the last days of September. I've heard it is likely that the pass is still open then. I hope so. :-) Thanks for the best wishes!

Hi there.
Only two months to go before I leave Holland and start my cycle trip to Australia, passing though Italy.. :-)

A week ago I went on a test ride with all my equipment in France. It was good I did, as I need to get some repairs done. Anyway, it was a great trip cycling down to Limoges, where I spent 3 months in 1988-89. I also made a little video of the trip.

Take a look at my blog..

Ciao.

Hi Luca. Sure! I will be writing blog entries on my blog most days - arctic-cycler.com, so you can follow me there. I will also post on this forum where there are new posts on my blog.. :-)

It looks like a friend will be cycling with me across the alps to Verona or Venice. Maybe you could join after that, or cycle along with the 2 of us for a while. Anyway, we will keep in touch!

Have a nice Sunday!

Ciao a tutti,
Ecco la mia lista attrezzature. http://arctic-cycler.com/equipment/
Eventuali suggerimenti sono i benvenuti!

Ciao a tutti,

Hi all,
On my bike trip of 36000km from Holland to Australia through Italy, I'll be meeting people. I will observe, and I will write. What are the sustainability issues people face across my path, and how do they deal with them? Who are the people? What are their stories? I will also support Green Pedals to promote this dialogue, and use to realise sustainable infrastructure in selected schools on my route.

Take a look at my blog entry on Green Pedals: http://arctic-cycler.com/2014/08/18/green-pedals/

The english version is below. :-)

Matthew

I am excited and scared at the same time. This September I will be leaving my job of 16 years, and cycle from Holland, where I currently live, to where I was born in Australia. The trip is about 25000 km will take 2 years.

I am currently planning the route, and am now working on the italian section of my trip. After entering Italy near Bolzano, I want to pass Venezia and Trieste before entering Croatia via Slovenia. I am not familiar with this part of Italy, and would really like your advice. Is this a good route? Are the roads nice?

http://arctic-cycler.com/world-cycle-2014/world-cycle-2014-italy/

Thanks very much for your help!!

Matthew

Ciao Matthew,
first of all I would like to wish you good luck and to cogratulate with you it will be a nice and exciting experience.
I do not live in that area of Italy, but I live in Belgium close to your Holland and I can give you some logistic advice considering the difference of the two contries.
In Italy is much easier to find a place where to get something to eat or to drink, even in the smallest town you find unless a bar open (our culture of bar is complete different from not of europe are more caffetteria and the room than real bar, it is not a place to drink only alcool) to get a sandwich a snack or something to drink. The shops are maybe closed between 1 and 4 pm, but do not close at 6 pm....so if you need to buy something there is something open until 8 pm even later and also in the weekend in the tourist area.
Be very careful to the car, try always to be on the right of the road never in the middle or close to the middle, it is not Holland or Belgium, there is less respect for cyclist and get used that they will beep you before to overcome you and most of the time they do not respect a security distance to do it. Do not be scared for what I said to you consider only tha in general there is more danger on the road and you need always to be concentrate.
Have nice ride

Olanda per l'Australia in bicicletta. Giorno 1.

Holland to Australia by bike. Day 1.
The day was surreal. Escorted by a mass of friends to the Belgian border, we sat in the sun, fearing the moment of our ways diverging. Then welcomed by more friends on arrival in Schimmert - with the Dutch flag and a glass of champagne. I still haven't fathomed everything. That will come.

3 ° giorno del ciclo mondiale dall'Olanda all'Australia.
Hello Artic-cycler:

I just came across this thread and I will follow your progress.
When in the Adige valley, you will go through Trento. I live there. If your schedule is compatible with a stop-over in Trento, you are certainly welcome to stay in our house. We do have extra space (for you and bike).
Depending on which days you are here - and if you like company - I could join you to Lago di Garda -> Verona. Just drop me a note at my email address.

Hi Zorat.
Thanks! That sounds great. I may be cycling over the Alps to Verona/Venezia with a friend from England. I'm not sure yet - it depends on his work. It would be great to catch up with you, and maybe cycle with you (if you want to join me/us). Let's keep in touch! :-)

In bicicletta dall'Olanda all'Australia. Giorno 5.

Dall'Olanda all'Australia in bicicletta. Giorno 6 Koblenz - Limburgo.

I woke to rain, and the rain remained looming all day. But the sun poked out too as I cycled along the beautiful Lahn valley, endowed with steep wooded sides and pretty villages.

Olanda per l'Australia in bicicletta. Giorno 10.

Holland to Australia by bike. Day 10.
After a dry start crossing rolling fields, the heavens tried to outdo their effort from yesterday regarding downpours – and they succeeded. Marius – my warm shower host – is preparing for a world cycle trip. I love the twinkle in his eyes. We are both about to experience it. Living on the road.
