Per gli appassionati che non parlano inglese ma che possono comunque aiutare questo ragazzo:

Ciao a tutti,

I cannot say anything about the logo on headset, but all other details are without any doubts typical of Stelbel. Considering that Stelbel production was limited and based on custom order, I'm really confident this is a true Stelbel

Yeah it was a lot of money for me, but I really love the quality of older Italian bikes and when I saw the Stelbel for sale in London I just could not resist. Hoping to bring it back to Italy in 2014 when my wife and I will be at L'eroica and hope to meet some of you there. Thanks for all of the comments so far guys.

I've seen that bike when it was bought here in Italy at the Novegro vintage cars and bikes fair, near Milano; it has been sold by a friend and i even had a chance of buying it but it was too small.
Don't worry it's the real deal, you may ask a discount because it doesn't have the decals tough!

D.stroy - thanks for the extra info. and tip on teh decals. Out of interest how much did your friend sell it to them for ? I'm wondering how much profit they are making out of me on this sale! Also did your friend buy it direct from Stelio and which year ? I'm not sure if 1980 is the correct manaufacture date for the bike.

Grazie

Yes it's a real stelbel, and in great shape!
the font used for "Stelbel" is not the typical one but it's note the only one frame from Stelio's hands with that font
This font could lead to a very early frame, like other aspects such as the conventional seat post screw instead of the Stelio's style he adopted on more recent frames (http://lanerossi.altervista.org/vintage/telaisti/images/Stelbel 02.jpg)

by the way buy it!

I just found the original fork for mine after months of research!

they are very rare and beautiful craft frames

I forgot, for the decals you can contact the guys from eroicacicli

Something else I noticed - instead of the Stelbel decals this bike appears to have had decals with the word Morotti on either side of the downtube and an Oliviero Morotti signature decal at the back of the top tube. The handlebar stem is also pantographed with the Oliviero Morotti signature. Who is/was Oliviero Morotti ??

Is this anything to be worried about ? These small pores appear under the joint between the seat tube and top tube. They look as though they may be the result of some bad welding rather than corrosion as the paint clearly covers some of the pores.

If i remember right he was selling it for 800 or 600€, i don't think they made more than 200€ of profits, but it may have sold for less because no one was interested, he didn't really made it appear from the bunch of other bikes he had, it was just thrown in there...
and he didn't bought it from Stelio or some shop in the 80's, he's a collector who sells stuff i think he bought it from the previous owner.

Lovely bike!
But in that area the welding is a bit dodgy, I am very surprised to see it on a quality frame. Although there isn't much signs of corrosion from the outside, I would inspect it more carefully. Did you look from inside the seat tube?

The bike does look a bit tatty, for its class. Would need some good renovation and polishing, therefore some discount should have been applied considering it doesn't looked serviced at all.
Feel free to pop in my workshop, I'll be happy to have a look at (not doing any work tho, I'm always fully booked 3 weeks ahead) and may give you some advice if I can

Thanks for all the additional info. Guys

I have a good cycle repair shop in the local town and they are currently servicing the bike. Looks like the derailleur wheels were totally worn out too so I have found some new super record ones to replace them. I'm hoping they don't find any other problems. Will let you know how it turns out.

Gattonero - where is your shop in London - message me location details if you can.

D.stroy - thanks for the info. !

A bit more info. on the frame for people who might buy one of these Oliviero Morotti decal frames.

I have been in touch with the owner of the Eroica Cicli website and blog who is in direct contact with Stelio Belletti http://www.eroicacicli.com/blog/meeting-mr-stelbel/ He has information that Oliviero Morotti was a bike dealer who bought up rejected or "second quality" frames from known makers and then sold them on with his own decals applied to the frame which clearly also included pantographed components.

It therefore looks like I have a reject Stelbel frame with a weld fault sold by this guy. It might be worth looking out for other Oliviero Morotti decal frames as they almost certainly indicate a bike which may have a fault !
